Analysis and Commentary: The Town of Wirt has a population of 1,111 according to the U.S. Census (2010) and covers 36 square miles of land. It was first settled in 1812 and was named for the famous writer William Wirt (1772-1834), who wrote “The Letters of a British Spy,” in 1803.
The Town of Wirt, located in Richburg, New York, is home to the Colonial Library which was built in 1850. It is the oldest library in town, and is built from hand hewn timbers on a foundation of rocks and stone. The Colonial Library is located at 160 Main Street, Richburg, New York. New York State Route 275 runs through town.
