The town covers 36.3 square miles of land in the northwest quadrant of Allegany County, New York. The town was first founded in 1808 from part of the Town of Angelica, and its name comes from a Seneca tribal word meaning “where the heavens rest on earth.”
Geographically speaking, the town is parted by both the Genesee River and Caneadea Creek. New York State Route 19 also passes through town and intersects New York State Route 243 north of the Village of Caneadea. Rushford Lake is part of the town’s western boundary.
Town Court is held every 1st, 3rd and 4th Wednesday each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Caneadea Town Hall. The District Attorney night is scheduled every 2nd Wednesday each month beginning at 6 p.m.
