Settled about 1765, the town of Stephentown claims to be the only Stephentown on Planet Earth, and has a sign at the town entrance to that effect. The town, named for Stephen Van Rensselaer, had a population of 2,903 at the 2010 U.S. Census. It covers just over 58 square miles.
Court sessions are held the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The Court Clerk is available from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday and on scheduled court nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
