New York Work Zone Tickets

New York State Police are working hard to protect construction workers this summer from speeding cars and have launched "Operation Work Brake."

The premise of the speeding ticket campaign is to remind drivers to slow down in construction zones. The initial implementation of the ticket blitz will run for five days. The ticketing will be run jointly with the New York State Thruway Authority and State Police Troop T announced.

The most relevant portion of the work zone statute in New York is

§ 1180 (f) Basic rule and maximum limits.

(f) Except as provided in subdivision (g) of this section and except when a special hazard exists that requires lower speed for compliance with subdivision (a) or (e) of this section or when a lower maximum speed limit has been established, no person shall drive a vehicle through a highway construction or maintenance work area at a speed in excess of the posted work area speed limit. The agency having jurisdiction over the affected street or highway may establish work area speed limits which are less than the normally posted speed limits; provided, however, that such normally posted speed limit may exceed the work area speed limit by no more than twenty miles per hour; and provided further that no such work area speed limit may be established at less than twenty-five miles per hour.

According to a recent State press release:

"Throughout the enforcement period, Troop T will be out in full force patrolling the highway, as well as monitoring construction zones," said State Police Troop T Commander Major Robert C. Meyers. "Safety is Troop T's number one priority. We ask motorists do their part by using caution while driving through the construction zones. Remember, traffic fines are double in work zones. Motorists who speed; drive distracted or are simply careless when traveling in a work zone pose a great safety risk to highway workers and other drivers. There is no excuse for that type of driving."

Operation Work Brake is intended to "put the brakes" on crash-causing behaviors, and to save lives. During the five-day work initiative, additional members of Troop T, dedicated solely do conducting speed and aggressive driving enforcement, will be positioned daily along the Thruway.

"The construction season continues throughout the summer season. The Thruway reminds everyone of the need to drive safely and responsibly, and pay attention to work zones and construction workers," Madison added.

New York State Police Troop T issued 1,354 tickets during the 2011 "Speed Week" campaign.
