Tips and Additional Information

Tip: Once you have received your traffic ticket, please be sure to plead guilty or not guilty by the date provided. Failure to answer your ticket could result in your driving license getting suspended.

Points: A speeding ticket ranges from 3-11 points. Take a look at the following chart for the breakdown of points:

Speeding

Points

01 to 10 mph over the limit

3

11 to 20

4

21 to 30

6

31 to 40

8

More than 40

11

Once a driver has 11 points on their license, their license can get suspended. Please remember it is a crime to drive with a suspended license, if you are pulled over the officer can arrest you and impound your car.

Fines: In terms of quantifiable dollars and cents, the average conviction to a 76/55 mph zone will usually face a fine up to about $400.00, a $300.00 fine payable to DMV, and a few hundred dollars in insurance increases.

Fines that are imposed by a Judge are set by the New York State Legislature and codified within the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law. There are limits to the amount that driver can be fined.

A conviction to a violation with points does not convert into an automatic insurance increase. The algorithm that most insurance companies use to assess an insurance increase is proprietary in nature and not widely shared the public. There are many factors that can be taken into consideration including but not limited the driver’s age, type of vehicle driving, and accident history.

Suspension: There are multiple ways that can result in a suspension of your driver’s license. Some include but are not limited to failure to answering your ticket, failure to paying court fees, getting 2 work zone tickets, and accumulating 11 points.

Junior License: If you have a junior license and are facing a speeding violation, your case would have to be handled in a very delicate matter. New York State has stringent guidelines for our young drivers. A court appearance may be required regardless of your plea.
