Legends of Alfred the Great, who ruled as King of the West Saxons (Wessex) and successfully defended his kingdom against the Vikings, were brought by emigrants to the town and village of Alfred, New York, which had a population of 5,237 at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census. New York State Route 244 passes through town; ending near Alfred Station at State Route 21. The area is also served by Allegany County Routes 10, 11, 12, and 42.
