ABOUT INTERSTATE 87
Interstate 87 is located entirely in New York State and runs for 333 miles through New York and into Montreal. It is considered to be an extremely important highway since it connects numerous highways from various rates and serves at least 80 million people. Roads that connect to the Interstate 87 serve several mid-Atlantic states including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It also connects New England and Quebec. It is eastern New York’s main highway from the north to the south and it enters Canada at Rouses Point.
History: Interstate 87 was built in several stages between 1957 and 1967. It was assigned in 1957 as part of the interstate highway system.
Routes: The I-87 has three major sections each with its own exit system. The first one is Major Deegan Highway which starts from exit 1 on I-278 to exit 14 i.e. Mclean Avenue. Major Deegan Highway starts in the Bronx at the Triborough Bridge. It heads west for about a mile through Mott Haven, running parallel along the Harlem River. It goes on to Highbridge where at the connection of Deegan and the Cross Bronx Expressway. The I-87 also follows a north-eastern route through Van Cortlandt Park, Mosholu Parkway and Jerome Avenue. The highway then goes past Jerome Avenue northwards towards the New York-Yonkers border.
The second section is the New York Thruway with its first exit at Hall Place and its last (exit 24) at Northway and I-90 East. After the Yonkers border, the I-87 turns into the New York Thruway and proceeds towards Westchester County in the north. It connects with exit 1, which is one of 12 exits in the county at Central Park Avenue. Exits 2 to 3 serve local streets. I-87 exits through exit 4 and connects to the Cross County Parkway. At exit 8 in the north, it is joined by I-287 and both cross the Hudson River to the Tappan Zee Bridge. I-87 and I-287 stay overlapped for 15 miles and split at exit 15 near the New Jersey border. I-287 goes into New Jersey while the thruway heads towards the Ramapo River Valley. The thruway then goes past Harriman, the city of Newburgh, New Platz Village and the city of Kingston. It runs through several other towns, up to Albany where it connects with I-787 at exit 23 and the I-90 at exit 24. After passing through several suburban areas, the I-87 leaves the thruway to join the Adirondack Northway in the south.
The third section of the I-87 is the Adirondack Northway with exits from Western Avenue/I-87 North up to Champlain (exit 43). The I-87 overlaps with the I-90 for about half a mile before splitting at Champlain at the Canadian border. It heads northeast towards Albany and Saratoga, Warren and Essex counties and Clinton County, ending at the Champlain St Bernard de la Colle border. Interstate I-87 has three branches i.e. 287,587 and 787.
Interstate 287, also known as the Bruckner Expressway, starts from Woodbridge New Jersey at the junction of the NJ440 and New Jersey Turnpike. It goes out through Bridgewater and several other places before exiting at Suffern through the New York Turnpike, across the Tappan Zee Bridge and onto the Cross-Westchester Expressway.
Interstate 587 connects I-87’s New York Thruway with Kingston City in upstate New York. It incorporates the Colonel Chandler Drive, the New York Thruway access road and the New York 28. New York 28 meets I-587 on Esopus creek and on to 32 Albany Avenue in Kingston’s downtown area. The I-587 is expected to be reconfigured to turn the current five way intersection into a roundabout. Work is expected to begin in 2019.
Interstate 787 runs along interstate 87 to New York 7 along the Hudson river. It crosses the Hudson River via the Collar City Bridge and ends up in Troy. West of the Hudson River, the 787 runs as a surface street into Cohoes. It was planned as the Hudson riverfront route during the 1950s.
Interstate I-87 is a highway that runs predominantly through the state of New York while facilitating commerce between the mid Atlantic states, new England and Quebec and serving over 80 million people in these regions. It runs mainly across the north-eastern part of New York State. It is made up of three sections i.e. the Major Deegan Highway, the New York Thruway and the Adirondack Northway.
