If you are reading this webpage, there is a good chance that you were issued a speeding ticket on either I-84 or Route 9D and your ticket is returnable to the Beacon City Court.
Everyone knows that pleading guilty to a speeding ticket can be costly but its unclear exactly how much it can cost.
Depending on the rate of speed, the amount of a fine can vary. Furthermore, the assessment of a fine is set by the judge and can vary on a case-by-case basis.
This chart will give you a brief glimpse into the sentencing guidelines for a speeding conviction.
Offense | Fines |
First-time speeding offense | $45 to $600 |
One or more speeding tickets (within eighteen months) | Up to $1,575 |
Traffic Infraction | $100-$300 |
Disobey a Traffic Signal (red light) | $225-$675 |
Misdemeanor Convictions (no other penalty provided) | $200-$1,225 |
Uninspected Vehicles | $25-$200 |
Unregistered Vehicle or Trailer | $25-$200 |
Equipment Violations of Vehicle or Trailer | $0-$100 |
In addition to the fine, New York State has added a mandatory surcharge to all speeding convictions. The surcharge is additional monies payable to the court but ultimately gets paid to the State. In other words, the monies collected on a fine will stay within the local municipality while the monies collected on a surcharge will go to New York State.
There are two other main monetary penalties that may be imposed against a driver. First, there is the driver’s responsibility assessment or the DRA as it is commonly referred. The DRA is a penalty fee levied against a driver and payable to the Department of Motor Vehicles once a driver is convicted of 6 points within an eighteen month period. For each additional point, the driver will be required to pay an additional $75.00. Therefore, if a driver is convicted of eight points, they will be given a $450.00 driver’s responsibility assessment. Second, there are the insurance increases. Insurance increase can vary tremendously from insurance company to insurance company. There are many factors involved when calculating a driver’s annual premium. Some of those factors can include but not be limited to major violations of the vehicle traffic law, car accidents, and the age of a driver.
